On February 16th, 2024, a ribbon-cutting ceremony marked the official opening of a new Swine Multiplier and Techno Demo Farm (SMTDF) in Vigan City. This collaborative effort between the City Government and the Department of Agriculture (DA) forms part of the DA’s INSPIRE program, aimed at revitalizing and expanding the Philippine swine industry.

The facility uses a tunnel-ventilated enclosure, providing an optimal environment for its 30 high-quality breed sows. This initiative aims to significantly improve swine breeding standards in Ilocos Sur and the region as a whole.

The SMTDF project falls under the National Livestock Program (NLP) and serves as a pivotal platform for training and extension activities. Farmers and individuals interested in swine husbandry can gain valuable knowledge and skills, empowering them to contribute to the industry’s growth.

Ultimately, the project aims to generate ample quantities of high-quality breeding stock and supplies, bolstering the swine-based livelihood programs of the DA and other government agencies. This will translate to improved income opportunities and overall economic development for the region.

Vigan City, as one of the two SMTDF project beneficiaries in Ilocos Sur, sets an example of proactive collaboration and commitment to agricultural advancement. This initiative has the potential to create a positive ripple effect, inspiring other communities and contributing significantly to the national swine industry’s progress.
